Steffen Terk : das Vermenschlichte tier / the humanized animal

19 September - 31 October 2008

Lorenzelli Arte is happy to open the new exhibition season with the solo-show of German artist Steffen Terk, his first show Italy.

The artist will be present at the opening, Friday, September 19, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., coinciding with the Start Milano event. In the proceeding three days of the opening of the Milanese exhibition season, promoted by the adherent galleries of Start Milano, the exhibition will also be open Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 21, 2008 from 11:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Steffen Terk, born in Dresden in 1950, grew up in the adverse cultural climate of the DDR. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and between 1971 and 1976 took part in the collective experience Lücke with A.R. Penck, Haral Gallasch and Wolfgang Opitz. It is in this first artistic phase that he outlined the characteristics of his painting: anti-romantic and focused on the study of shape and color – theories and attitudes which matured within the Lücke group. In 1980, he moved to Bonn, where his art was exhibited in numerous galleries and museums including: Grosse Düsseldorfer Kunstausstellung; Kunstmuseum Basel; Städel; Albertinum Dresden; Kunstverein Oberhausen; Sekretär Kunsthandel Frankfurt; Artsekretär Kunstraum di Bonn.

In this exhibit, 40 paintings will be displayed, oil on metal, medium and large size, especially created for Lorenzelli Arte between 2007 and 2008 and belonging to a dear theme of the artist, that of zoomorph representation. With the series Animals for Lorenzelli Arte, the artist moves from the typical human attitudes and feelings on the subject of animals, in an "attempt to turn over the habitual projective mechanism of man, who sees animals as an embodiment of actual attributes or moral characters. In spite of the titles, where in the animal figure still appears like a subject of man - Jan Peter's Hyaena, Flynn's Wolf, Björn's Ram, Kerstin's Panther, Marie's Jellyfish and so on - in these paintings by Terk, there is a desire to return to the animal kingdom, a representative autonomy, free from allegorical or symbolic implications." (Ivan Quaroni, the exhibition catalogue).
